Thank You! voting makes a difference

On Election Day two years ago, Minnesota citizens voted in favor of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution which created Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants to support “projects of enduring value for the cause of history and historic preservation across the state.”

I’m honored to announce that the book I am co-editing with my friend Zabelle Stodola, an annotated reprint of Mary Butler Renville’s 1863 A Thrilling Narrative of Indian Captivity, has been awarded a Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant to fund the creation of new maps and the acquisition of photos to illustrate the book, which is scheduled for release from the University of Nebraska Press in Spring 2012.

Thanks to each one of you whose vote for the Legacy Amendment in November 2008 made this grant, and hundreds of others, possible. As a result, Minnesota is funding important arts, cultural, and historical work, despite the sluggish economy. I also want to thank the Board of the Pond Dakota Heritage Society for sponsoring the grant and for making the maps available to the public.

As the book nears release, I look forward to sharing more about the story with you!
